What is MTHFR?
MTHFR stands for Methylenetetrahydrofolate Reductase- it is good to know.. Read more to find out WHY? An MTHFR mutation is a problem associated with poor methylation and enzyme production. What in the heck does this mean?
Dr. Axe is one of my FAVORITE resources….
“An MTHFR gene mutation can change the way some people metabolize and convert important nutrients from their diets into active vitamins, minerals and proteins. Genetic mutations can also alter neurotransmitter and hormone levels. In some cases, although not all, changes in how this enzyme works can affect health parameters, including cholesterol levels, brain function, digestion, endocrine functions and more.”- Dr. Axe

Why am I writing a blog post on MTHFR?
- It is Common- more common than you would think. The symptoms vary with each person- because our diets are lifestyles are so different. Our genetic tendencies and our habits and lifestyles are all working it out.
- There are changes that you can make that can reverse symptoms and or turn on and off these gene expressions. This idea is the study of Epigenetics. Below you can read more on what can you do to alter your gene expression.
Here are more reasons why MTHFR Interested me:
- I am blessed with having four children. Two seemed to take longer to get over certain illnesses than others and had other nutrient deficient tendencies like anemia and Ferritin/Iron Imbalances when they were ill. Something was just not right there…. I kept questioning it. When I discovered their nutrient needs they were much better.
- I was in my Forties when I got Mono from a child in a class I was teaching. Why wasn’t I able to shake this? One year, two years.. ok something wasn’t right.
- I had always eaten “healthy” and had a fit lifestyle- always. I noticed a few symptoms that seem to be related to MTHFR- and how they related to the spectrum of B Vitamins- specifically B12 and Folate.
- I felt better when I was on my Prenatal Vitamins- before, during and after pregnancy. Why? (Spoiler- they were methylated- “natural sourced”- which is what my body needed to process. The synthetic versions did nothing and were actual a toxin my body just processed out). Ok.. that was a huge spoiler. 🙂
As I meet people and talk with friends…. I noticed a few red flags- thyroid, chronic fatigue, difficulty getting pregnant….. I have asked them if they have ever heard of or been tested for MTHFR. Some were told during fertility care- but they were not educated on the benefits of lifelong supplementation. This is why knowing what MTHFR is important!!!!
- I have friends that are doctors and they see that gene expression in patients that can’t seem to get over a long term infection or illness. Interesting.
Good News!!!
You can do something about it!!!
23 and Me offers a ancestry and methylation and detox “profile” report that can be linked to a genetic site for interpretation. From there you are able to see if you have +/+ or -/- (+/-) combinations for the MTHFR gene expressions that are tested. With many more genetic screenings. Its affordable and very informative. The prices fluctuate with discounts and promotions but usually $169-$199.
Some doctors will also test/screen for the MTHFR gene and lab costs vary. Ask your doctor!!!
What to do to support yourself?
