How to feed picky eaters food that is healthy:
Anyone that has ever dealt with a picky eater understands how difficult this can be. Going grocery shopping can be frustrating because you don’t have any idea what to buy. Everything just seems so much harder than it should be but, there is help. You will discover that there are many benefits associated with picky eater recipes. How can you get them involved?
Here’s How to Get Kids Involved!
- Make a List! For one thing, they will help you prepare a grocery list which in turn will make shopping much easier. These recipes can help you prepare meals that are more colorful and fun capturing the attention of the picky eater and making them want to try new things.
- Food Adventurers! It is terribly frustrating to eat healthy and not have everyone at the table on board! We work fairly hard in our family to become Food Adventurers. That means that you must try something 5 times (more specifically on 5 DIFFERERNT occasions) before you are able to opt out of a food! This may mean that I need to season things differently or present them a little more creatively but usually after 5 times I get “I like it”, “It’s OK” or “It’s not that bad”. I will take any of those as a positive!
- Let Them Cook! One great way to lure children to eat healthy food is to involve them in the cooking process whenever you are in the kitchen. Children of ages three and four love to help with simple cooking processes like stirring and pouring, while older children can get involved in cracking eggs, measuring ingredients- applying math skills, and teens can cut vegetables and oversee the cooking. Perceiving the composition of the food will tempt the child to have no choice than to eat the food. Apart from this, any child that got engaged from start to finish will want to see and eat what he/she has prepared.
There a few rules we implement here:
- Rotating meals as often as possible.. not eating the same thing each week.
- Making a list of a few STAR recipes that are loved by all and using those a few times a month.
- Bringing along one of my children on my weekend trip to the grocery store. (If you are eating healthy you more than likely go to the store multiple times per week.)
- Involve one or more of your children in menu planning and meal prep.
- Give everyone a job!
Rotating Meals:
This involves some planning on your end. If you are not a list maker you can use Pinterest to help you. Create a secret board “Meals this Week” then like those that you are interested in and Pin them to that board as you plan your weekly menu. You can open each pin as you shop to shop with.
Star Recipes:
Making a Box or File of STAR Recipes really helps you stay organized, focused and makes your table happier. You can also create a Secret Board on your Pinterest Account for “Star Recipes” so you remember it was approved by your entire table!
Get Shopping:
Inviting your spouse or little one to the store really helps them understand a few key things in eating healthy.
- The healthy foods are on the outside perimeters of the layout.
- An idea of how much things cost.
- Allows you to talk about healthy choices.
- Develops a sense of pride in helping and becoming a Food Adventurer!
Need an App that also does meal planning and can deliver? eMeals has a great concept and service!
Get others involved:
- It is easier to work ALONE in the kitchen. I KNOW Ït’s Hot!!!””Watch Out” “Get a Chair!!”. This is part of allowing your little ones time to get comfortable in the kitchen. One extra helper is nice one-on-one time….. and memories are made here!
Job Assignments:
We have four children- so we give each child a different job. Boys can be competitive by nature so they are assigned and rotated.
- Waiter
- Chef
- Manager
- Clean-Up Crew
I have used paper plates on the inside of my pantry but now we have signs we rotate to keep track. If I miss a week they remind me it’s time to rotate.
